The copper alloy candlestick with a rectangular pierced socket, knopped stem and domed, dished foot with a broad circular base. This example is exceptionally large, the usual height of such a form being approximately 21cm.
The form of Flemish candlestick dated 1550 illustrated by Schiffer corresponds to the form of this example. (Peter, Nancy and Herbert Schiffer, The Brass Book, Schiffer Publishing, 1978, p, 149.)
Caspall comments on a Flemish candlestick of similar form, dated circa 1550 as an example with 'an alternate blade knop stem. The lateral rectangular ejection aperture in the socket is another Dutch-Flemish sixteenth century feature, as is the gently tapering socket with its heavily reinforced top moulding.' (John Caspall, Fire and Light in the home pre-1820, Antique Collectors' Club, 2000, p. 78-79.)
