The carved trusses on the front corners of this cabinet relate very closely to the celebrated suite of gilt wood furniture supplied by Gillows to the Earls Fitzwilliam for the Whistlejacket Room at Wentworth House.

The recent discovery of the 1833 payment to Gillows for the Wentworth Woodhouse suite confirms this traditional attribution.

Several variations on the Wentworth Woodhouse suite are recorded including a suite supplied by Gillows in the 1820s under the guidance of the architect Lewis Wyatt, for the New Drawing Room at Tatton Park, Chesire. Further examples all attributable to Gillows, include a pair of armchairs in the V&A; an armchair formerly at Ickworth, Suffolk, sold Christies London 7th July 1994 lot 56 and an armchair formerly in the collection of the late H.T.S. Upcher at Sherringham Hall, Norfolk, sold Christies Sherringham Hall 22-23rd October 1986 lot 73.

A rosewood library table with near-identical cabochon-carved legs, and almost certainly forming part of the Fitzwilliam Gillows commission, was sold by a member of the Fitzwilliam family at Christies London 16th November 1989 Lot 80, and later at Sothebys 24th February 1995 lot 153. A folio table of similar proportions was offered by Sotheby’s London on 30th November 2001.
