All of the marble specimens mounted in this cabinet are marbles that were used in Ancient Rome. The mounted marbles are distinct from earlier specimen marble cabinets by their carefully chamfered edges to enhance their presentation. The meaning of the monogram remains unknown; although its repetition in ink on the underside of one of the drawers, together with the date and place suggests that it may be the signature of the maker rather than the man who commissioned it.
