East Meets West
Part of our inaugural display at TEFAF Maastricht 2022 (STAND 262, 25th-30th June) was devoted to a collection of Chinese Export Furniture. Following our particular interest in objects which reflect the historic intersection of cultures and design, we accumulated a number of superb examples of furniture and art works made in China in the 18th and 19th centuries specifically for export to The West.
The furniture design follows familiar Western forms, but the materials used, the construction techniques, and the carved or lacquered decoration are unmistakeably Chinese. The timbers include bamboo, padouk and the traditionally treasured huang huali.
