Following the recent £7.85 million purchase from Christie's of L.S. Lowry’s 'iconic masterpiece' “Going to the Match” , we were delighted when Jonathan's Coulborn's mother subsequently rediscovered this local newspaper clipping. It shows Jonathan's father, Peter, when he bought “After the Match” from Sotheby's in the early 1960s.
Thomas Coulborn (Peter's father) was apparently a little surprised that he had spent so much money on the painting and made it clear that a speedy re-sale was required. Peter offered it to a collector in Edgbaston the following week. The client sensed his anxiety, gave him a large brandy and left the room to telephone Thomas to ask if the young dealer’s conviction was justifiable…before making the purchase.
It turned out it was a good buy!
